First Light: Embracing Play, Process, and the Quieting of Ego

I’m excited to share the first small painting in my new series—a piece that holds personal meaning and marks the beginning of my creative journey here in France. This work was inspired by my cherished stained-glass Tiffany lamp that sits in my home. I love the way the colours come alive and interact when illuminated, and I wanted to capture that magical feeling on canvas.

This painting became a playground for exploration. It began with curiosity, not certainty. In creating it, I rediscovered how vital play is in the artistic process. When I allowed myself to experiment freely—choosing the right colours, adjusting shapes, playing with different mediums to achieved the look of the raised leading—I found unexpected pathways forward. I learned that problem solving is an integral part of creating art and that each “mistake” is an opportunity for growth.

One of the biggest lessons this piece taught me was the importance of quieting the ego. That voice that says “it has to be perfect,” or “it lacks complexity,” is loud when you’re just starting out. But in order to truly create, that voice needs to step aside. When it does, something deeper and more intuitive can come to the fore—something rooted in observation, feeling, and play.

This small painting is the first step in a journey I’m excited to continue. Entitled ‘First Light’, it celebrates new beginnings—but it’s also about process, trust, and letting go. Thank you for taking a moment to see it. I hope it brings a bit of warmth and wonder to your day, just as that lamp has done for me.
